The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) has implemented changes to its processing of oil sands exploration (OSE) applications by bundling applications submitted by proponents. The AER will process OSE applications under section 20(1) of the Public Lands Act and in accordance with the Code of Practice for Exploration Operations (which is under the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act), together with related Directive 056: Energy Development Applications and Schedules (Directive 056) well licence applications. This is being done as part of the AER’s progress towards a “one application, one decision” method when processing AER applications, and is consistent with section 30(2) of the Responsible Energy Development Act.

The AER is of the opinion that a bundled application process will benefit stakeholders. Processing related applications simultaneously makes the regulatory and decision-making process more efficient and easier to navigate, and the project will be clearly understood as a single project rather than as individual pieces.
