Invitation for Feedback on Draft Requirements for Reducing Methane Emissions
The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is seeking public feedback on draft methane emissions reduction requirements in Directive 060: Upstream Petroleum Industry Flaring, Incinerating, and Venting and Directive 017: Measurement Requirements for Oil and Gas Operations.
As a part of the Government of Alberta’s Climate Leadership Plan, the AER was tasked with developing requirements to reduce methane gas emissions from upstream oil and gas operations by 45 per cent (relative to 2014 levels) by 2025.
The requirements address the primary sources of methane emissions from Alberta’s upstream oil and gas industry: fugitive emissions and venting, which includes emissions from compressors, pneumatic devices, and glycol dehydrators.
A multistakeholder committee provided input on the draft requirements. The committee had representatives from industry, environmental nongovernment organizations, and research organizations. Details about the development of the draft requirements can be found on the Methane Reduction landing page of the AER’s website.
To provide feedback on Draft Directive 060 or Draft Directive 017, complete the new online feedback forms. Alternatively, fill in the feedback form available on each directive’s landing page and send it by email to @email or by mail to the Alberta Energy Regulator, Climate Policy Assurance Branch, Suite 1000, 250 – 5 Street SW, Calgary, Alberta T2P 0R4. Feedback will be accepted until May 28, 2018.
