The natural gas industry uses commercial storage to allow seasonal gas delivery. Storage is used to absorb excess gas production in summer months and to offset shortages in colder winter months. We do not forecast volumes of stored natural gas in projecting long-term production. Several pools in Alberta are being used for commercial natural gas storage as an efficient means of balancing supply with fluctuating market demand. Other gas storage schemes in the province are not included.

  • Storage: Storage levels in 2019 were below the five-year average.
  • Withdrawals: Natural gas withdrawals for all storage schemes in 2019 exceeded injections by 1606 million cubic metres (106 m3) because of colder than normal weather in the first quarter, decreasing gas production and interruptible service curtailment during maintenance-related pipeline outages through storage injection season.

Table S5.4 lists the commercial natural gas storage pools in Alberta for 2019, including the capacity and the injection and withdrawal volumes of those pools.

Location and Delivery and Export Points

Figure S5.8 shows the locations of all existing commercial gas storage facilities and the border delivery and export points for gas removals in Alberta.
