For over 40 years, the AER has welcomed summer, co-op, and practicum students into our organization to gain valuable hands-on experience, either inside our offices or out in the field.

We offer our students a well-rounded experience, including opportunities to

  • take part in meaningful and challenging projects;
  • learn from knowledgeable experts and mentors;
  • pursue career-enhancing courses and other learning development activities;
  • get involved in social clubs and groups ; and
  • network with professionals from across the AER, including other students.

Student Positions

Summer Students
We post summer student positions each fall, between mid-October and early November. Summer students work with us for a total of 16 weeks (May until August). We look to fill AER positions across the province—in Calgary, Edmonton, Fort McMurray, Slave Lake, and our eight field centres.

Co-op Students
We are proud to partner with universities, colleges, and professional development programs to help co-op students gain a career-building experience with the leading regulator in energy development. Co-op students work with us for 4 to 8 months, depending on the student’s post-secondary program requirements.

Practicum Students
We partner with a number of professional development programs to support short-term, unpaid practicums. If you are interested in pursuing a practicum at the AER, contact your post-secondary program coordinator to ask about available opportunities.

Student Benefits

The AER values a healthy work-life balance. Summer and co-op students are eligible to earn up to two days off each month based on their hours worked through our flex day program

Additional Training

Summer and co-op students are encouraged to take advantage of our many in-house training courses, which we offer both in-person and online. With courses on time management, the business of oil and gas, plain language writing, indigenous awareness, and wellness, to name a few, there's something for everyone looking to expand their personal or professional skills.

Summer and co-op students also have access to Degreed, an online platform with free courses and seminars to help all AER employees boost their professional development, skills, and knowledge. Students will still have  access to Degreed long after their term at the AER ends.
