Purpose of this Directive

This directive sets out requirements for the storage of materials produced, generated (including wastes), or used by the upstream petroleum industry.

Here, the term “upstream petroleum” industry is limited to facilities, well sites, and pipelines licensed or approved by the AER for the exploration, production, recovery, handling, processing, treatment, disposal, or transmission of hydrocarbon-based resources or any associated substances or wastes, but does not include oil sands mining operations or the underground cavern storage of natural gas.
